Biodiversity Blitz 2026
This September, Frankston City Council is celebrating Biodiversity Month by joining forces with neighbouring councils for Biodiversity Blitz 2026!
We’re in a friendly competition with councils across Melbourne – including Yarra Ranges, Baw Baw, Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, Greater Dandenong, Knox, Latrobe, Mornington Peninsula, Nillumbik, Kingston and City of Yarra – to see who can record the most species on iNaturalist.
By taking part, you’ll:
- Discover and learn about local plants and animals
- Contribute to valuable citizen science – real data used by scientists and researchers
- Celebrate and showcase the incredible biodiversity in Frankston City

iNaturalist walk and talk
Discover your inner citizen scientist at our fun iNaturalist walk and chat. Learn how to identify and record local wildlife for the Biodiversity Blitz. Then join us at for a hands-on working bee, where you can make a real difference to local habitat while enjoying the outdoors and meeting like-minded people.
Action Sweetwater Creek: Lower Sweetwater Creek
- Thursday morning 3rd September, 9:30am (meet at Hoadley Street Frankston South entrance)
- Working Bee 9-11 am.
Friends of Belvedere Bushland Reserve
- Third entrance on Ti—Tree Crescent, closest to the oval on East Road.
- Sunday 13 September, Meet at 10:30am for the walk.

- Mobile Phone with iNaturalist App installed
- Suitable walking shoes and drinking water

Franktalk with Sean Dooley – ‘The Birdman’
Saturday 12 September 2026 at 10:30AM (SOLD OUT)
Enjoy a lively morning at Frankston Library with Sean Dooley, writer, comedian and one of Australia’s best-known bird lovers. Sean has written for shows like Full Frontal, Hamish and Andy and Spicks and Specks, and is the author of books including The Big Twitch. He is also editor of Australian Birdlife magazine and a record-holding former national birdwatching champion.
Sean grew up in Seaford, exploring the wetlands where he’s now spotted more than 180 bird species. Driven by the belief that people protect nature when they connect with it, he uses humour and insight to share his journey from law student to birdwatching comedian and conservation advocate. Frankston City Council’s Environment and Sustainability team and Frankston City Libraries are delighted to bring you this event, ahead of the October Aussie Bird Count. Bookings are essential.

Coastal Bioblitz: Keast Park Foreshore
Join us for a guided walk along the Keast Park foreshore reserve to discover the native coastal vegetation that helps protect our dunes and support local biodiversity.
When: 30th September 9:00am, meeting at Keast Park playground
Route: We'll walk the coastal foreshore reserve down to the Riviera Outlet and back
Along the way, we'll explore:
- The native coastal vegetation communities found in the reserve, and the role they play in stabilising dunes and supporting local wildlife
- Weed species present in the area and how ongoing management supports the health of our native plant communities
- How coastal vegetation contributes to climate adaptation, buffering the foreshore against erosion and storm surge
- The changes we're already observing in the dune system, and what's projected as coastal hazards increase with a changing climate
This walk makes the end of Bioblitz month, so come with the iNaturalist app pre-installed on your phone so you can snap and log sightings as we go — every observation helps build a picture of the biodiversity along our coast.
Bring sturdy shoes, a hat and water bottle, and come curious — whether you're a keen local naturalist or just want to learn more about the coastline on your doorstep, all are welcome.
