Travelling to the Frankston Waterfront

With thousands of people visiting the waterfront each summer, we strongly encourage the use of public transport where possible. We understand this isn’t always practical, so if you’re driving, please plan your journey ahead of time and allow extra time for traffic and parking to ensure a safe and stress-free visit.

Public transport

From Flinders Street Station, take the Frankston Line to Frankston Train Station. The station is around a 1 km walk from the waterfront. Follow the signs on Young Street, turn right at Davey Street, and continue down to the water.

Plan your journey: https://transport.vic.gov.au/journey

All Victorians have access to free weekend public transport until 1 February 2026.

Driving

The Frankston waterfront is approximately 55 km from the Melbourne CBD and takes around 50 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
Travel via the M1 (Monash Freeway) and EastLink (M3), then continue onto Peninsula Link / Mornington Peninsula Freeway, following signs for Frankston. Take the Frankston exit and follow signage to the beach.

Parking

Parking near the waterfront can be limited at peak times, particularly during major events such as the Waterfront Festival, which may require space for equipment and safe emergency vehicle access. If you’re driving, please allow extra time to find parking in the surrounding streets and local car parks:

Staying safe

Our waterfront is one of Frankston’s greatest assets, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely this summer. Please follow all signage and instructions to make the most of your visit.

Lifesaving

Frankston Surf Life Saving Club beach patrols:  November - April (usually 12- 5 pm) weekends and public holidays.

Council officers will continue to operate beach-buggy patrols, assisting lifesavers by providing increased coverage across the beach this summer.

Please always follow instructions, and swim between the flags.

Monitor beach conditions

Check the weather before you head out for a day at the beach and stay on top of changes.

Free swimming and water safety programs

Peninsula Leisure, in partnership with Council, is offering a series of free, fully subsidised swim programs through their Can Swim initiative. These programs are designed to help people of all ages build confidence and essential water safety skills — from little beginners to teens and families. Bookings are required.

Safety patrols

Council’s Rapid Response Team will work alongside Victoria Police to maintain a visible safety presence across the foreshore, parks, shopping strips, and the city centre.

Accessible beach

The Accessible Beach Program includes extensive beach matting, beach wheelchairs and walkers, a hoist, shaded daybeds, and trained support staff, enabling people of all abilities to enjoy Frankston Beach with greater ease. Bookings are required.

Dogs on the beach

Summer beach restrictions for dogs are now in place until 31 March 2026.
