Banyan Reserve Pumps Track and Play Space

Construction timing: June – late 2026

Good news for Carrum Downs! We’re upgrading Banyan Reserve to include a new play space and pump track, designed to support the growing recreational needs of families in Carrum Downs and Skye.

Shaped by valuable community feedback, the project will transform Banyan Reserve into a vibrant, inclusive, and accessible space where people of all ages and abilities can play, ride, and connect.

The upgraded play space and surrounding open space will offer a range of engaging and inclusive play opportunities, including areas for families to connect:

  • A climbing forest including ropes and slides
  • Swings (four-bay set and a basket swing)
  • Accessible carousel
  • Water play elements
  • Picnic shelters, tables, BBQ and bench seating
  • Landscaping and planting

The new pump track will provide a safe, purpose-built environment for bike, scooter, and skate users to build skills and stay active. It will include two zones, catering for both beginners and intermediate users.

This project will help create a high-quality local destination that supports healthy, outdoor lifestyles, strengthens social connection, and enhances the overall liveability of the area.

It follows other recent open space and recreation facility upgrades in Carrum Downs including:

  • $4.95M Sandfield Reserve Precinct Revitalisation (jointly funded by Council and the Australian and Victorian Governments)
  • $1.2Mil District-level play space at Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve (council funded).

Sustainability at play

Equipment from the existing play space will soon begin a brand new chapter far from home in Cambodia— thanks to Council's partnership with Rotary Peninsula 2.0 ‘Play It Forward’ initiative. This is the third play space in Frankston City to be included in the project this year. Equipment from Ferndale Reserve left our shores in March and has just arrived in Cambodia, while play equipment from Gamble Reserve was dismantled ready for shipping to PNG in May. Two more play spaces will be included in the project this year.

Funding

The $2.03M Banyan Reserve upgrade is jointly funded by Council and the Victorian Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Grants Program.

Community input

Community feedback gathered during consultation has played a critical role in shaping the design, ensuring the play space and pump track reflect local needs and aspirations.

Construction

Works will begin on 10 June and are expected be completed in late 2026.

During this time, the existing play space and site for the new pump track will be closed to the community. However, there is still plenty of open space available for walks and other recreation activities. The existing oval will not be impacted.

Existing on-site parking will also not be impacted. However, park users and locals can expect additional traffic movements in and out of the reserve. For your safety please always follow signage.

Stakeholder engagement

Melbourne Water is a part landowner of Banyan Reserve, and Council has been working closely with them to ensure all environmental and other requirements and approvals are in place as part of the project. We will continue to work with them throughout construction.

A United Energy community battery was recently opened on site. Council has also been engaging with UE as part of the planning process. The construction will not impact the battery’s operation.

Strategic alignment

The upgrade supports several Council’s key strategic priorities, including:

  • Play Strategy 2021
  • Open Space Strategy 2016
  • Skate and BMX Strategy 2025

Together, these ensure a coordinated approach to delivering diverse and high-quality recreation opportunities across the municipality.
