Boating and Swimming Zones
Boating and swimming zones are prepared under the Marine Safety Act 2010 with the primary aim of providing a safe access and use of the coast and waterways. They apply conditions of operation and prohibit incompatible uses for safety reasons.
Parks Victoria, as the Local Port Manager of Port Phillip and Western Port, jointly with Transport Safety Victoria who oversee the management of recreational boating across Victoria, extensively consulted local community to apply zones across Port Phillip and Western Port. An Interactive Map is available on the Safe Transport Victoria website to view all local boating and swimming zones.

Dredging Program
A dredging program is underway at the entrance to Kananook Creek with the aim of improving accessibility to boat users throughout the year. Scheduled monthly dredging (weather permitting) is carried out with a pontoon sub-dredge to maintain 1m navigable depth below chart datum on the approach/entrance. Dredged material is to be deposited for beach renourishment at the adjacent Frankston Beach. Sand deposited on the beach may initially appear darker however sun-bleaching will naturally lighten the sand over time. Some areas will have restricted access during dredging work. Members of the public are advised to follow the on-site signs and warnings provided.
Council cannot guarantee permanent access to Port Phillip Bay, as the water depth in the creek channel and entrances to the bay is subject to natural forces.
