Frankston to celebrate 60 years of history, culture & local stories
Published on 03 August 2026
Frankston City will celebrate a major milestone this August, marking 60 years since it was officially declared a city on 24 August 1966.
From 21–23 August, a vibrant program of events will mark Frankston City's 60th anniversary, celebrating six decades of community, culture and local pride.
The program will showcase the city's rich history and vibrant present through a diverse range of exhibitions, performances, talks, markets, family activities and community experiences. From exploring historic photographs and memorabilia to enjoying live music, local storytelling and public art, there is something for all ages to enjoy.
Cr Sue Baker, Mayor Frankston City Council, said the anniversary was an opportunity to reflect on how far Frankston City has come while looking ahead to an exciting future.
"Every person who has lived, worked, volunteered, studied, raised a family or run a business in Frankston City has helped shape the community we celebrate today," Cr Baker said.
"Since officially becoming a city in 1966, Frankston City has grown into a vibrant, creative and connected destination that continues to evolve while staying true to its strong sense of community.”
"What makes this milestone even more special is that we're celebrating alongside several of our community's long-standing sporting organisations."
"The Karingal Bulls Football Netball Club, Frankston District Netball Association and Frankston Dolphins Football Club are also marking 60 years in 2026, highlighting the important role local clubs have played in shaping the identity and spirit of Frankston City over generations."
"While we're proud of our history, this milestone is also about looking forward and embracing the opportunities ahead for future generations.”
Program highlights include special exhibitions at Frankston Arts Centre, historical displays and author talks at Frankston Library, free entry to McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery, a community mural project, a swing night celebration and free screenings of the iconic film On the Beach, which was filmed across Frankston, Mt Eliza and Melbourne.
Community members can also contribute memories and reflections to a special time capsule, creating a lasting record of Frankston City in 2026 for future generations.
