A new Repair Program for Frankston!

Frankston City Council is delighted to launch our new Repair Program. Through this program we want to empower the community to develop skills and confidence to repair items instead of throwing them away.

In our modern world, it often feels easier to buy something new, than to fix what we have. But if we knew how to repair the things we already own, we could give them a second chance. This will reduce waste, save money, and help keep quality items in circulation for longer.

About the Program

Frankston City Council has a goal is to reduce waste going to landfill and to help you hold on to treasured items, by promoting repair and reuse.

We are committed to creating a supportive space where everyone is welcome. If our expert repairers can’t fix your item, we will advise you on what to do.

At these events we will support you to learn and share knowledge.

FAQs

How does the Roving Repair Program work?

Frankston City Council is trialling a series of repair events covering repair items, such as bicycles, toys, textiles, books appliances and woodwork. Volunteer repairers will do their best to help you repair or repurpose items, whilst sharing skills, to empower you to continue your repair journey. Bring your damaged items and we will do our best to match it with someone who can help.

Are repairs done for free?

Frankston City Council is appointing expert and hobby repairers to help you. Wherever possible repairs will be conducted for free, with some basic materials, such as glues being provided. In some instances, you may be advised to purchase materials or parts and bring your item back to a subsequent event.

If your item is battery powered or is a lamp we recommend bringing new batteries and/or globes, so that we can test it.

What can I bring to a repair event?

Repairs will be conducted by volunteers and we will be reliant on their skills and knowledge. Most items can be assessed. However, there are some items that can often be tricky to repair, particularly electrical items with casings that can’t be opened. Sewing machines and zips can also be very tricky and may not be able to be repaired. We recommend contacting the event organisers for advice.

Important note: whilst we will do our best to match you with a repairer not all items will be able to be repaired on the day if at all.

What if my item can’t be repaired?

Our repairers will do their best to repair as many items as possible. However, if an item is beyond repair, requires specialised tools or parts, or we don’t have time on the day of the event, we will provide guidance on where you can get further assistance.

If an item can’t be repaired, we’ll support you to identify the best way to dispose of it, ensuring any recyclable materials are saved.

Can I volunteer at a Repair Workshop?

Absolutely! We welcome passionate individuals who want to contribute to the Repair Program. If you have repair skills or simply want to help with admin, organising and logistics, please get in touch with us. You can contact Circularity Education Officer at Frankston City Council or simply complete the volunteer Expression of Interest online form.

Submit Expression of Interest

Volunteers will be recruited by Frankston City Council and are required to complete all onboarding requirements, including a Working with Children Check and a National Criminal History Check.

Do I need to register for the Repair events?

Although the events are free, booking will help us gain an understanding of how many people are coming and what they are bringing, so that we can advise our repairers and they can bring appropriate tools whenever possible.

Don’t have items to repair but want to attend?

Feel free to drop by during any of the events for more information, or just to learn a bit more about the repair movement, the circular economy and check out the repairs. We would love to connect.
