Volunteers contribute $1.3 million in time to strengthen community

Last month, Frankston City Council celebrated the enormous contribution of its local volunteers — whose efforts are valued at $1.3 million worth of donated time annually — at its annual Volunteer Thank You Event, held during National Volunteer Week.
Frankston is home to more than 16,800 volunteers who collectively donate more than 46,000 hours of service each year. Council alone supports around 400 volunteers through more than 20 programs across the city — from youth mentoring and Meals on Wheels to community gardening, arts, and library support.
Held under this year’s National Volunteer Week theme “Connecting Communities,” the event brought together nearly 100 volunteers in recognition of their vital role in strengthening local networks, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Frankston City Mayor Kris Bolam, joined by Deputy Mayor Steffie Conroy and Councillors Sue Baker, Nathan Butler and Emily Green, extended heartfelt thanks to attendees for their commitment to making Frankston a better place to live, work and play.
“Volunteers are the heart of our city,” he said. “Their acts of kindness, no matter how big or small, create ripples of connection and belonging that strengthen our entire community.”
This year’s celebration welcomed representatives from groups including Meals on Wheels, the L2P learner driver mentor program, library services, environmental “Friends of” groups, community centres, senior ambassadors, and Council advisory committees. The event also provided an opportunity for volunteers to connect across programs, share experiences, and inspire new collaborations.
“From planting trees and mentoring youth to delivering meals and supporting community events, our volunteers play a vital role in shaping a vibrant, inclusive city,” said Mayor Bolam.
