Best Start is a Victorian Government early years initiative to support families and caregivers to provide the best possible environment, experiences and care for children from birth to school entry.

The program supports all Aboriginal children and also prioritises children who may be experiencing vulnerability.

Best Start partnerships draw on local data and community insight to identify children and families who may need additional support within their communities. By working together, communities and service providers respond to issues as they arise at a neighbourhood level.

This locally informed and targeted approach is highly effective in addressing the challenges families face. The program also emphasises prevention, including establishing clear referral pathways to ensure families can access more specialised supports when needed.

Best Start Priority Outcomes

  • Children engage and participate in early childhood education (kindergarten and supported playgroups) and enter school as confident and involved learners.
  • Children and families actively engage with MCH services, attending key ages and stages visits to optimise health, well-being, safety, learning and development.
