Preschoolers and students from Prep to Grade 2 are invited to unleash their inner superheroes this August as the Mayor’s Reading Challenge returns to Frankston City Libraries.

The month-long program offers free activities, comic-themed events, and fantastic prizes for preschoolers who read 60 books and prep – grade two students who read 30 books or comics throughout August.

Frankston City Mayor Kris Bolam, a pre-service teacher with a speciality in History and Humanities, said the challenge aims to inspire a love for reading across all genres, from picture books to comic books, while fostering important literacy skills.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Mayor’s Reading Challenge back for another year, encouraging kids to share in the joy of reading and explore their imagination,” he said.

“As someone training in education, I know firsthand the importance of early literacy and how vital it is to make reading both fun and accessible.”

“It is crucial that we capitalise on trends such as the popularity of superhero films in conjunction with literacy tools like comic books. Children generally excel in areas they are passionate about, so fusing superheroes and comic books together is a logical approach.”

Throughout August, libraries across the city will host weekly superhero-themed storytimes for younger readers, while primary-aged children can join the Comic Club to meet fellow comic fans and take part in interactive reading sessions.

Frankston City Councillor Emily Green, whose son Asher is neurodivergent, says reading supports his eye contact, turn-taking, and love of language.

“He has a joyful connection with books that nurture his growth and communication,” she said.

“He finds comfort in re-reading favourites like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Possum Magic, and The Big Hungry Bear, often linking their stories to everyday objects at home. He enjoys textured, hard-cover books where learning becomes both sensory and meaningful.”

“The Mayor’s Reading Challenge adds a fun and engaging element for kids like Asher, who thrive on structure and organisation.”

The challenge kicks off with a Superhero Launch Party on Friday 1 August at Frankston Library, featuring storytelling, face painting, and superhero activities. Children and their families are encouraged to come along dressed as their favourite superheroes!

The program concludes with an End of Challenge celebration on Thursday 28 August at Frankston Library. Winners will be announced during the week of 8 September with a mix of prizes available for those who meet the reading goal.

A Comic Book Club will be held every Wednesday in August where young superheroes can create their own zines, get comic book recommendations and meet fellow comic lovers
