Position Overview:

The Canteen Staff at Southern Districts Rugby Club play a vital role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the club by providing friendly, efficient, and hygienic food and beverage service to players, supporters, and visitors. This position contributes directly to the community spirit of the club and helps generate essential revenue.


Key Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Food & Beverage Service:

  • Prepare and serve food items such as snacks, sandwiches, hot food (e.g. pies, sausage rolls), and beverages (hot and cold).

  • Operate kitchen appliances (e.g., sandwich press, deep fryer, microwave, coffee machine) safely and efficiently.

  • Handle cash and operate the till or point-of-sale (POS) system accurately.

  • Restock shelves, fridges, and food displays as needed.

2. Customer Service:

  • Provide friendly, courteous, and helpful service to all patrons.

  • Maintain a positive and welcoming atmosphere in the canteen.

  • Respond promptly and politely to customer queries or concerns.

3. Food Safety & Hygiene:

  • Follow all relevant food safety and hygiene standards (as per local council or health regulations).

  • Use gloves, aprons, and hairnets where appropriate.

  • Ensure food is stored, prepared, and served at appropriate temperatures.

4. Cleaning & Maintenance:

  • Maintain cleanliness of the canteen, including counters, cooking equipment, sinks, and floors.

  • Wash dishes, utensils, and equipment using appropriate sanitizing methods.

  • Dispose of waste and recycling properly and regularly.

  • Report any maintenance issues or hazards to the Canteen Manager or Club Committee.

5. Inventory & Stock Management:

  • Monitor stock levels and alert the Canteen Manager when supplies need replenishment.

  • Rotate stock and ensure all products are within use-by dates.

  • Assist in receiving and storing deliveries.

6. Teamwork & Communication:

  • Work cooperatively with other staff or volunteers.

  • Attend briefings or training sessions as required.

  • Maintain clear communication with supervisors and fellow staff during busy periods.


Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Friendly and approachable manner

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Basic food handling and hygiene knowledge (training can be provided)

  • Ability to work under pressure, especially during peak times (e.g., game days)

  • Reliability and punctuality

  • A willingness to contribute to the positive culture of the club


Working Conditions:

  • Work is typically during weekends, game days, and special events.

  • Shifts may vary based on the rugby season, weather, and club activities.

  • Role may involve standing for extended periods and some lifting of stock.


Desirable (but not required):

  • Experience in food service, hospitality, or a similar environment

  • Responsible Service of Food or equivalent food safety certification

  • Barista experience (if applicable to the canteen offering)
