Seaford Pier - Shade Structure
Frankston City Council as part of the FY2020/21 Capital Works Program has provided funding to consider the design and implementation of a Shade Structure at the base of the ramp access to Seaford Pier.
Why is the project needed?
Seaford Pier is a popular attraction during summer and the bench seating area between the Pier and the Life Saving Club provides a welcome rest area for visitors and beach-goers as well as Café patrons. The effect of sun glare and coastal exposure can make the seating area uninviting so a shade structure is being considered to improve user comfort and expand its usage during the hotter months. A structure containing shade cloth is considered unsuitable at this location, but rather a lightweight, rigid structure is proposed similar to that recently installed at Keast Park in Seaford. Please refer to the artists impressions of the proposed shade structure overleaf.
Frankston City Council will provide 100% of funding for this initiative.
This project is scheduled for implementation before the end of June 2021.
What are the implications for the immediate community while the works are carried out?
Seaford Pier will continue to be accessible for residents and walkers, however the seating may be unavailable during the works. The works would be programmed to occur in the cooler months after the summer season has concluded to minimise disruption. During the works there may be construction activities, which may affect pedestrian access to the existing timber seating area and pier. Minor construction daytime activities will be undertaken some of which may generate noise and dust, all of which will be within recommended EPA guidelines.
Will there be any changes to this section of Seaford Foreshore?
There are minimal/no impacts to Foreshore vegetation as a result of the works and no trees are planned to be impacted or removed. The existing seating, stairs to the beach and Pier access will be unaffected at the conclusion of the works.
