Dog Beach Trial Approved
For Immediate Release: 16 December 2009
The beach from north of Mile Bridge to Keast Park, Seaford has been selected as the location for a new trial which allows dog owners to take their pets to the beach for extended hours over summer, provided they are restrained on a lead.
Previously, dogs were prohibited from all Frankston City beaches between 9:30am to 7:30pm from 1 December and 31 March. But under the trial approved by Council last night (14 December), dogs will be permitted on the designated beach up until 11:00am and after 5:00pm.
Restrictions on all other beaches in the municipality remain unchanged.
Signage will be erected at six major beach entrances between Mile Bridge and Keast Park to inform beach users of the trial regulations, which come into effect on 1 January until 31 March, 2010.
Frankston City Mayor Chris Richards said: "Summer in this part of the world is very warm, and councillors are aware that many dog owners would like to take their dogs for a cool off on hot days.
"This trial will be reviewed after three months to see if dog owners used the specified beach responsibly, and whether this is something that Frankston residents - both those who own dogs and those who don't - would welcome on a more permanent basis."
After a request from Council in June 2009, Council officers conducted a survey of 700 residents, consisting of 350 dog-owners database and 350 non-dog owners.
Close to 71% of respondents indicated that they would like to see dog access to beaches over summer, with almost half of those responding that access for dogs until 11:00 am and after 5:00 pm as the preferred times.
