As part of the Kananook Creek Environmental Effects Statement, Frankston City Council engaged an award-winning playground design and construction team to build a world-class playground on the Frankston Foreshore. The playground design is based on the theme of sand castles emerging from and collapsing into the beach. The playground includes separate toddler-junior and senior-level play equipment, as well as significant new picnic facilities. There is a large sandplay area with sound play and agility play adjacent, a twisted series of junior sandcastles, a large senior collection of sandcastles, and four sets of swings.
The playground has also been designed to allow ease of access for children and adults with disabilities.
Recently, a Devine Liberty Swing was installed at the playground. Funded by Frankston City Council, the Rotary Club of
Frankston and Variety Club, the Australian designed and manufactured swing allows people in wheelchairs, or with mobility difficulties, to enjoy the excitement of this form of recreation. Frankston Liberty Swing is one of the first installed in southeast Melbourne and only one of a handful in public playgrounds in Victoria.
Local residents can apply for a key to access the Liberty Swing by phoning Frankston City Council on 9784 1888. Visitors to the municipality can also borrow a key from the Civic Centre, in Davey Street, or, once completed, from the Visitor Information Centre at the pier forecourt.
The playground has become a landmark for Frankston as part of the complete revitalisation of the Frankston Waterfront. Its popularity is clear to see with the growing number of families visiting the site every day of the year. The Victorian Department of Sport and Recreation and Frankston City Council jointly funded the playground.
The playground is located along Nepean Hwy, Frankston (Melway Ref 102 B3). Entry to the playground is via the Pier carpark. Amenities include a barbecue, picnic shelters, direct beach access and toilet facilities.
