In the past, Beauty Park was known for its association with Lord Baden-Powell and the Scouting Jamboree of 1934. The lower section of the park was used as a retarding basin during heavy rainfall. Its upper reaches comprised limited vegetation and received little use. For many years the park was home to the Frankston Croquet Club prior to its move to improved facilities in Nolan Street. Following their relocation, the Frankston Marching Girls used the park but they too have moved to Nolan Street.
Stage One and Two completed
Beauty Park has undergone a major transformation as part of a two-stage redevelopment. The works are part of the implementation of the Beauty Park Master Plan adopted by Frabkston City Council in March 2000. The Master Plan received widespread community support. The completion of Stage One has seen an increasing number of patrons use the park. Beauty Park is seen as a link between the Frankston Waterfront and Frankston's George Pentland Botanical Gardens.
Stage One has seen the construction of an ornamental lake that doubles as a flood mitigation basin. The lake has massed plantings of indigenous trees and shrubs as well as macrophyte planting to the water's edge and along the dry creekline. The creekline, with its large boulders and river pebbles, winds through grassed picnic areas and shade trees. There are two raised viewing platforms overhanging the water's edge, enhancing the experiences of visitors. From the deck a variety of seabirds and local wood ducks can be fed. A walking path circumnavigates the park. Massed plantings of indigenous species have commenced in the upper and middle sections of the park.
Special features of Beauty Park Lake include:
- The creekline carrying overflow floodwater from further up the park and slowing the water flow with a series of curves before entering the lake.
- A creek edge enhanced by indigenous planting along with macrophyte planting which are tolerant of periods of wet and dry.
- Large boulders protecting the edge of the creek bank. These also create a walkway across the creek at certain locations, defining access and preventing damage to the creekline by pedestrian traffic.
- A semi-abstract sculpture by Australian artist Deborah Halpern installed on 6 December 2002.
Stage Two completed June 2005
Stage Two introduces a number of exciting changes to Beauty Park which include:
Playground including: 5.8 metre high Corocord TM climbing net, combination unit with cubby house and slide and a toddler's climbing net.
Sandstone-clad pavilion providing shelter from the elements.
Barbecues, drinking fountain and bins.
Sandstone-capped seating wall.
Further works proposed for this financial year should include uplighting of significant trees within the park and a further 20 metres of rammed earth seating wall, and a low activity deck.
A Partnership
Frankston Sunrise Rotary Club joined Frankston City Council in the implementation of the Master Plan. Rotary Club members have been actively involved in improvements including:
- largescale plantings; and
- erecting the pavilion.
The Sunrise Rotary Club is keen to maintain a long-term involvement in the development of the park.
