Frankston City Council's Emerging Athletes Program is a source of funding for talented junior sportspeople residing in Frankston City. This program offers families of emerging athletes the opportunity to access funding of up to $1000 each year, as well as significant local media exposure in conjunction with the Independent Newspaper.
The inaugural program, from 1 July 2005 to 30 June 2006, featured 36 nominees from over 20 different sports.
Three young sportspeople were nominated each month. At the conclusion of the program in June 2007, 12 of the 36 nominees were due to be selected as Emerging Athletes, and each received funding of $1000 from Frankston City Council and a participating local business sponsor.
To be eligible for nomination, junior sportspeople had to be:
- A resident within Frankston City
- Under the age of 18 as at 1 July 2006
- A competitor at State, National or regional level in their chosen sport
Funds were distributed to assist athletes with ongoing costs associated with performing in their chosen sports. Nominations were selected by the Emerging Athletes Assessment Committee.
The 2006-07 winners were announced on Friday 6 July 2007 at Frankston South Recreation Centre.
