The Dream Team Still Going Strong

A group of local people with disabilities have proven that dreams can come true with the launch of their own DVD and running of the first disability-friendly dance party in Frankston.

Community Services Minister Sheryl Garbutt officially launched the Dream of the Century DVD at Frankston Arts Centres Cube 37 on 18 November 2005. About 130 people attended the launch and the crowd then increased for the dance party that followed.

The DVD and dance party were the culmination of seven months hard work by participants in Frankston City Councils The program seeks to make our communities more welcoming and inclusive, creating more opportunities for people with disabilities to participate fully in the life of the community, she said.

The DVD, based on a TV game show titled Dream of the Century, feaured a number of music clips expressing the participants' dreams for the future. It was developed and produced by the participants in partnership with local disability service organisations and Club Wild, one of Australia's leading community cultural development organisations, run by people with disabilities for people with disabilities.

Council Community Development General Manager George Modrich said one of the key objectives of Frankston City Council's draft Sustainability Policy was to foster community participation, community capability and empowerment. "Through the MetroAccess Project and our other initiatives, we are working to build continuing relationships which contribute to the recognition of diversity as a positive aspect of the Frankston community - and which work forward building a sustainable community."
