Animal Control within the municipality is primarily the responsibility of animal owners, but State Legislation relating to the keeping of animals gives powers to Animal Management Officers to enforce certain standards and requirements to be met by animal owners. Local Law No.7 establishes certain guidelines that animal owners in this municipality must comply with and they include the following matters:
- Numbers of domestic animals (pets) that may be kept
- The keeping of livestock (farm animals) in residential areas
- The keeping and housing of poultry and pigeons
- Provision of adequate fencing
- Protection of other animals and native fauna and flora
- Nuisances such as barking dogs. For more details, please refer to the section on Animal Noise.
- Dog excrement in public places
- Horses on reservations
Local Laws Officers are actively engaged in trapping feral and stray cats on Council Reserves and may also assist in providing traps to residents for trapping animals on private property.
