Apart from being unsightly and dangerous, small, carelessly discarded litter can cause injury to people through cuts and needle-stick injuries. It also provides a threat to wildlife which can be poisoned, choked or strangled by thoughtlessly dumped rubbish. Litter can have further reaching impacts on society by encouraging pests such as rats, mice and seagulls, and, with them, the spread of pathogens. Litter has also been linked to higher crime rates and a lack of community pride.
