Impact of Littering

  • Frankston City Council spends around $80,500 each year to clean up litter. This is rate-payer money that

    could be spent on other projects for the community. 

  • Litter is a threat to public health - litter attracts pests and is a breeding ground for bacteria. Broken glass and syringes are a serious health hazard 

  • Litter can be a fire hazard 

  • Litter looks dirty! Having litter everywhere reflects poorly on local communities and the city, especially in tourist locations such as the foreshore and natural reserves

  • Litter attracts more litter 

  • Litter can kill or harm wildlife and damage our waterways 

  • Litter is a lost resource for recycling

Breakdown of Litter

Litter in our streets, parks, waterways and beaches are a huge problem, both for the environment, and the health and safety of the community. Many littered items take a very long time to break down - so many of the items you use today will still be around long after you are gone.
