Impact of Littering
-
Frankston City Council spends around $80,500 each year to clean up litter. This is rate-payer money that
could be spent on other projects for the community.
- Litter is a threat to public health - litter attracts pests and is a breeding ground for bacteria. Broken glass and syringes are a serious health hazard
- Litter can be a fire hazard
- Litter looks dirty! Having litter everywhere reflects poorly on local communities and the city, especially in tourist locations such as the foreshore and natural reserves
- Litter attracts more litter
- Litter can kill or harm wildlife and damage our waterways
- Litter is a lost resource for recycling
Breakdown of Litter
Litter in our streets, parks, waterways and beaches are a huge problem, both for the environment, and the health and safety of the community. Many littered items take a very long time to break down - so many of the items you use today will still be around long after you are gone.
