Councillor Calling For New Meals on Wheels Volunteers
For immediate release: Monday, 25 August 2008

Frankston City Councillor Glenn Aitken has given his time, and his pedal power, to deliver Meals on Wheels on a number of occasions. Now, to coincide with National Meals on Wheels Day on Wednesday, 27 August 2008, he is calling on residents to help out the service in a time of need.

Each day, the Frankston Meals on Wheels service prepares and delivers almost 400 nutritious meals to its clients. But the new healthy range of meals has attracted 1200 new clients in the past year, and the service desperately requires additional volunteers.

Meals on Wheels were originally delivered by bicycle, and ' to re-enact the early service Councillor Aitken will be 'on his bike in the Frankston city centre this Wednesday, recruiting volunteers, while handing out tasty Meals on Wheels dishes.

The Meals on Wheels service currently has 110 volunteers, who each day, prepare and deliver different kinds of meals such as salads, soup, desserts, various main meals under the guidance of chefs Peter Ward and Sue Pyper. The service has also introduced culturally diverse options including Italian, Greek and some Chinese dishes.

Frankston volunteer Rona Russell loves the people she meets when delivering Meals on Wheels. "I am just delighted that I can help others and my heart goes out to the people I visit," said Rona. "I wish I had more time to spend but at least I make sure they're alright, or just be a friendly face in a quiet day."

Council's Meals on Wheels service is unique as volunteers assist in both production and delivery of meals. Preparation of meals begins at 6:00am each weekday with delivery finishing at 2.30pm.

Volunteers can choose to assist for as little as one hour per week and as much as 10 hours per week, and anyone who can spare some time during weekdays, including before work, is encouraged to phone Rachel on 9768 1624.
