MEDIA RELEASE
For immediate release: Tuesday, 13 February 2007
In February 2008, Sand Sculpting Australia will come to Frankston City. The festival, held in Rye since 2001, has attracted more than 350,000 visitors and generated over $4 million for the Mornington Peninsula economy.
Next year's festival will have the creative theme, 'Fairytales and Fables', thanks to Langwarrin South resident Kath Moodie, winner of the Frankston Sand Sculpting Competition.
Frankston City residents were invited to come up with a theme for the event, and while many entries identified the winning theme, Kath was the lucky contestant drawn to receive a $500 bank account with ANZ.
Sand Sculpting Australia will run from 19 February to 6 April, 2008, and will see 3500 tonnes of sand placed on the Frankston foreshore and carved into extraordinary shapes. Visitors to the Frankston Waterfront will be able to see sand sculpting of Puss in Boots, Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio, Tom Thumb, Mother Goose, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and many other fairytale favourites.
Frankston City Mayor, Councillor Glenn Aitken, congratulated Kath Moodie for her excellent entry, and looks forward to the event's arrival in Frankston. "This is an outstanding event, and I believe Kath's choice of 'Fairytales and Fables' will make it even more spectacular," he said.
"Frankston is very fortunate to attract this festival, which will attract people from throughout Australia and overseas. Having said that, it is the result of a lot of hard work by Council, and a reflection of the standing Frankston is now held in, that such a renowned festival will be held in our City."
Sharon Redmond, director of Sandstorm Events, who run the festival, believes the new location incorporates the best of both worlds. "Frankston is very much a part of the Mornington Peninsula, so the region overall will still benefit from this wonderful event," she said.
"We wanted the sand sculpting festival to be an accessible event for everyone. As Frankston is just 40 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD and easily reached by public transport, it was the ideal location that would allow as many people as possible to come down and receive enjoyment from the event."
