Tips For Holiday Makers

  • Holiday makers face the same risk as residents in high-risk bushfire areas across Victoria
  • Check the Fire Danger Ratings daily. (see below for information on Fire Danger Ratings)
  • If your holiday coincides with a day of Code Red Fire Danger Rating, delay the trip until the danger period passes
  • Avoid non-essential travel during days of high fire danger
  • Avoid bushwalking or picnicking in the bush on hot, dry and windy days
  • Avoid camping or hiking in high-risk bushfire areas on days with a Fire Danger Rating of Severe, Extreme or Code Red
  • Keep a hard copy of maps as GPS or mobile phone maps might be affected by smoke
  • Find out if there's a Neighbourhood Safer Place in your area
  • Include protective clothing (hat, sturdy shoes, long-sleeve pants and shirt made from natural fibres), mobile phone and charger, food and water, first-aid kit, woollen blankets and battery-powered radio in your travel relocation kit.

Fire Danger Ratings

  • Fire Danger Ratings predict fire behaviour should one start and how difficult it would be to extinguish. Temperatures, dryness and wind are important factors when calculating the ratings.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology forecast Fire Danger Ratings up to four days in advance.
  • The higher the rating the more dangerous the conditions.
  • You need to know the daily Fire Danger Rating and what actions to take - for more information visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au
  • Regularly monitor conditions in your area and keep up to date by tuning in to ABC Local Radio, commercial radio stations or Sky News TV or go to www.cfa.vic.gov.au or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
