The first day of school is almost too late for a child to begin to read. The early years of life are more critical to a child's development than we realised. 4 Year Old Group

Children develop much of their capacity for learning in the first three years when their brains grow to 90% of their eventual adult weight. With every reading of a nursery rhyme or game of peek-a-boo, thousands of connections among the brain are formed or strengthened..Although we continue to learn new things throughout our lifetimes, after the age of 10 our brains begin to wipe out connections that haven't been used making it harder to learn- Karoly et al. 1998.

A parent who reads three books a day to their child can reach the 1000 books in one year. Many children who have been read to regularly have learnt to read before they start school.

Susan Straub 2006 tells us that "the number of words a baby hears each day is the single most important predictor of later intelligence, school success, and social competence. If those words come from one of babies special people mother, daddy, grandma, nanny - rather than from a box on the wall. Reading counts"
