Sustainable Transport

The transport sector is heavily dependent on oil products, with road transport contributing 13% of national greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions are also growing rapidly with a 25% increase from 1990-2000.

In order to reduce emissions, a sustainable transport alternatives include greater use of public transport, walking, cycling, car pooling and more efficient vehicles.

Public Transport

Frankston City is well serviced by public transport. For timetables go to the Metlink website.

Cars

At best, the average car is only 30% efficient. That means that 70% of the energy consumed is wasted. If you need to buy a car, it is important to select the most efficient vehicle that meets your transport needs. Similar to appliances, there is now a Fuel Consumption Label on new cars, giving the litres/100km and the carbon dioxide emissions in grams/km for the vehicle.  For more information on the Fuel Consumption Label visit the Department of Environment website.

Here are some helpful hints for more efficient motoring:

  • Buy the most fuel efficient vehicle for your needs. Do you really need a four wheel drive or a large car?
  • Consider buying a hybrid vehicle or high efficiency diesel
  • Drive smoothly - avoid sudden braking and acceleration
    Minimise idling
  • Watch your speed; 110km/h uses 25% more fuel than 90km/h
  • Inflate tyres to the highest pressure recommended in your car's manual and check them regularly
  • Reduce the car's weight - remove all unnecessary items from the car
  • Regular maintenance can reduce fuel consumption by 5%. Check wheel alignment annually
  • Consider taking an advanced driver training course
  • Plan your trip - avoid peak hour travel to save time and fuel
  • Subscribe to Greenfleet or another reputable emission offset program

Walking and Cycling

Walking and cycling are great ways to get around. It's healthy and good for the environment. Council is currently developing a comprehensive bicycle strategy. For information about bicycle trails see the Bicycle Victoria website.

The Victorian Government encourages increased use of public transport, walking cycling and car pooling through the TravelSmart Program. For more information about TravelSmart projects and to access resources to develop a sustainable travel plan for your school or workplace go to the TravelSmart website.
