Annual Business Survey

Frankston City Council's Economic Development team conducts an annual business survey aimed at profiling the businesses within the Frankston municipality.  As of 2010 the survey will be conducted biannually with the next survey to be undertaken in early 2012.

Your Business

  • The largest business sectors to respond to the survey were Retail trade (17.5%), Personal and Other Services (17.5%) and Manufacturing Services (10.1%).
  • 33.5% of respondents reported establishing their business in Frankston between the years 2005 to 2009, with 3.7% indicating that they started their business in Frankston in 2010.
  • 66.4% respondents reported having between 1 and 4 full-time staff, 47.9% had part-time staff and 43.7% had casual staff. There was an expectation by 58.1% of respondents that staff numbers would remain the same during 2010.
  • Cultural and Recreational Services Sector, Communication Services and IT and Health and Community Services Sectors reported the greatest average investment in their business in the last financial year (2008/09).  The Cultural and Recreational Services sector and the Transport and Storage sector reported the highest expected investment in their businesses durig 2009/10.
  • 69.2% of respondents reported an expected increase in business turnover.

Your City

  • The greatest strengths and competitive advantage of operating a business in Frankston, as identified by half of the respondents, was the population growth and density, and the central location of Frankston in relation to reaching the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne. Affordability, lifestyle, development/potential and accessibility were also highly rated by respondents.
  • Six out of ten respondents stated that drugs and crime in Frankston was a competitive disadvantage of operating their business in the area and over half cited the perceived negative image by visitors to the area. 41% cited parking availability, while 8% stated that there were no competitive disadvantages.

How Frankston City Council can assist your business?

  • The Online Business Directory  reported not only the greatest awareness (84%) but also highest usage by respondents (71.6%). Awareness of the Economic Development's regular communication via email and quarterly newsletter also reported high awareness (77.4%) with usage at 68.9%
  • 32.3% of respondents reported learning about services offered by the Economic Development team via the e-bulletin.

Online Business Directory and Communications

  • 60.5% respondents reported being current members of the Online Business Directory
  • Average satisfaction concerning communication from the Economic Development Team was 70.9%
