Parents know the balance between keeping their children safe and giving them enough freedom to develop independence is like walking a tightrope.
Frankston City Council and the State Government's TravelSmart initiative are lending a hand by hosting an information and discussion night called: Safety and independence for our kids? How?
Special guest speaker will be Dr Karen Malone, a Professor of Social Sciences and Asia-Pacific Director of UNESCO's worldwide Growing Up In Cities project.
Dr Malone believes being too protective of children is having a wide range of consequences. "Freedoms to be a child within our local environment help develop important competencies that are drawn on throughout our lives.
"As environments become more complex, these play a key role in supporting children to become streetwise and good risk assessors. At a time when children need these competencies more than ever, we are limiting their capacity to develop them."
The event will also look at what skills children will need to thrive in the 21st century, and how parents can best deal with children's needs for both freedom and safety.
The event is free, but please RSVP to 9784 1734 for catering purposes.
