Debbie joined the Frankston Athletics Club, and by the age of 17 she had won five gold medals at State level, silver at the Nationals and had won the Australian title in the Heptathlon.

Debbie took up hurdles at the age of 20 and made her international debut at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane where she won the 400 metre hurdles in the record time of 55.89 seconds.

The highlight of Debbie's career came when she won gold in the 400 metre hurdles at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, running the second fastest time in history and becoming the world record holder.

Debbie set nine Commonwealth records between 1982 and 1988, and was undefeated in 400m hurdles and Australian Champion for 11 years.
