Frankston Transit City Project

Background to the Project

Transit Cities is a major Victorian Government program aimed at creating opportunities for people to live and work in the same area - reducing the need to commute and increase time spent with family and friends

Transit Cities encourage higher-density development around public transport nodes. They have the potential to create vibrant communities where people have easy access to jobs, facilities and services and are part of Victoria's Melbourne 2030 Strategy, to manage growth and change across metropolitan Melbourne.
(See http://www.dse.vic.gov.au/transitcities ).

The Frankston TAFE to Bay Structure Plan, adopted by Council in September 2005, provides the vision, strategy and implementation plan for Frankston town centre. Kananook Creek and the transit interchange are two precincts to be developed. Connections between them will be improved and new residential and mixed use developments encouraged under the plan.

The Victorian Government has already contributed to a wide range of projects under the Transit Cities Program including streetscape works in Wells Street and the tourist information centre. a further $11.6 million over four years was announced for Frankston in the 2006/07 State Budget. This funding is mainly for improvements along the east bank of Kananook Creek. A smaller amount is available to improve 'connectivity' within the town centre and to investigate redevelopment of the transit interchange.

These projects will provide many benefits for Frankston, such as better amenity, improved safety and an increased level of retail, entertainment and services.

See the latest bulletin for an update on these projects.
