Frankston Lifesaving Club With Junior LifesaversOn Tuesday, 12 August 2003, The Premier of Victoria, The Honourable Steve Bracks, MP officially opened the redeveloped Frankston Life Saving Club.

The opening was held on Level 3 of the facility to showcase Frankston's shoreline and magnificent views.  Mr Bracks told guests that the multi-purpose building was sympathetic to its environment and an important step in the broader redevelopment of the Frankston Foreshore."Lifesaving plays an important role in delivering emergency services to Victoria, and this new facility provides local lifesavers with a suitable venue to serve the community and foster water safety," Mr Bracks said. "It's also a beautiful setting and will be used by many beachgoers as a contact point for information and bay and safe swimming."

The State Government contributed more than $220,000 to the project through the Department of Sport and Recreation.  Mr Bracks congratulated Frankston City Council on contributing more than $910,000 to the development.

Frankston City Council continues to dramatically improve Frankstons Foreshore through the implementation of the recommendations of the Kananook Creek Development Environmental Effects Statement (EES). The Frankston Life Saving Club development was a key project in these improvements and will complements works  adjacent to the Frankston Pier, as well as the Frankston Foreshore Regional Playground and the Olivers Hill to Frankston Pier Boardwalk.

The Councilembarked on building "the best Life Saving Club on Port Phillip Bay"for Frankston in March 2001.  The redevelopment will increase the year round use of this important community asset while minimising the impact upon the surrounding dune environment. The renovations included:

  • A new 120-seat restaurant/cafe and balcony with views across the beach to the bay and Frankston Pier
(Waves on the Beach - opened December 2003)
  • A renovated beach-level kiosk
  • Improved beach-level access and storage for the Frankston Life Saving Club to facilitate more efficient life saving activities.
  • A new public toilet facility that will replace the existing adjacent bluestone toilet
  • A new expanded third level to accommodate existing Life Saving Club surveillance operations and to provide improved training and meeting facilities

The Frankston Life Saving Club redevelopment involved extensive consultation with theFrankston Citycommunity and key stakeholders, including the Department of Sustainability and Environment. The redevelopment was jointly funded by Frankston City Council and the Department of State and Regional Development through the "Life Saving into the 21st Century" program.

A Frankston Life Saving Club representative expressed delight with the new facilities on their old site.   The club is one of Melbourne's oldest.  Formed in 1924, the club has maintained a safe, clean beach and foreshore for Frankston residents and visitors.  Its members are dedicated volunteers who train throughout most of the year and work extremely hard over the summer months to ensure visitors to our beaches have a high standard of care and service available to them.
