Kananook Creek Boulevard Development

A final concept has been developed for Kananook Creek Boulevard. This concept incorporates the community's aspirations, after an extensive consultation process on two options in November/ December 2007. The designers are now working on the detailed designs and making the necessary approval applications at the same time. Frankston City Council invites any further comments on the final concept.

The two concepts were promoted widely with media releases, letters to adjacent owners and occupiers, postcards to all households in Frankston, displays erected in Council offices and the library, display boards on site and workshops with the community.

40 written responses and 210 reply postcards were received as a result. They are overwhelmingly positive, with people recognising the benefit to Frankston's image. The designers have gained a thorough understanding of what people want from this project and what they like and do not like. As a result, the designers have come up with a hybrid design combining the best parts of options 1 and 2.

Kananook Creek Development Plan

Key elements of the final design include:

Beach to Wells St

  • A shared cycle and pedestrian way at road level linking with the Kananook Creek trail to the north
  • A boardwalk next to the creek edge, as well as spaces to casually sit and relax
  • Revegetation of the creek bank with indigenous species
    Wells St to Playne St
  • A central plaza which provides for events, community activity and outside dining The plaza will provide seating at the creek edge with saucers created by tree planting locations
  • Further back behind the plaza, the plans show new building envelopes, proposed for a separate project, to draw activity to the plaza

Playne to Davey St

  • Large planting areas at these street ends introduce new vegetation at the creek edge, softening the eastern bank. They will include water treatment initiatives
  • A wide upper level responds to community need for easy access for all abilities. It combines with a narrower deck at creek level. The transition between levels is made with a curved feature wall which will provide a space for art, as well as further seating spaces. The upper level will have lots of planting for shelter. It will also allow service vehicle access to the rear of Nepean Hwy properties
  • A new shared vehicle and foot bridge at the end of Davey Street, across to Long Island and the Yacht club. It allows the road between the Life Saving Club and Yacht club to be removed, and for the west bank of the Creek to be made into a more natural sloping edge
  • Consolidate car parks at the north and south ends of Long Island, allowing more landscaping
  • Improvements to the ends of Davey Wells and Playne Streets.

The designers are now working on details like pavement materials, plants, furniture styles, public lighting, wall and step profiles, treatment of level changes and the staging of work. Once this is done and all approvals are given, Council can tender for construction
